Global IP registration status in 2021

According to a report of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published on November 21, 2022, the number of intellectual property applications worldwide has increased by 3.6% in 2021.

Global patent growth driven by Asia

WIPO identifies three Patent Offices as the main drivers of patent growth: China, Korea, and Europe. China’s IP authority has received almost half of the global patent applications, with 1.59 million applications. Asia is a region that has seen strong growth in the number of patent applications over the past decade, increasing from 54.6% of applications in 2011 to 67.6% in 2021. WIPO. attributed this growth in large part to long-term economic growth in China. In recent years, the Chinese government has increased its emphasis on improving the country’s domestic patent market. China’s patent market has experienced a boom in recent years due in part to government subsidies intended to encourage patent applications and innovation. However, China’s patent market does not have a good reputation globally, and the Chinese government is trying to intervene to increase the value of the Chinese patent market.

Remarkable brand growth

WIPO considers the 5.5% growth in trademark applications to be “remarkable”. The year 2021 marks the 12th consecutive year that the number of global trademark applications has increased. Countries with a large increase can be grouped into two categories: those with a sharp increase in the number of domestic applications and those receiving a large number of foreign applications. High-income countries, such as the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Canada see an increase in foreign trademark applications. In contrast, the large increase in the number of applications by Brazil, India and Türkiye was mainly due to domestic applications. Similar to patents, Asia has seen strong growth in trademark applications over the past decade. Asian countries accounted for 69.7% of total applications in 2021 compared to 44.7% in 2011. China’s Intellectual Property Office received 9.5 million applications, far outstripping the country. followed by the United States, which received about 900,000 applications.
